| LONG DISTANCE BUSES - DAR ES SALAAM |
Be
aware that speeding is a big problem. In general the more you
pay the better the service in terms of safety, and reliability.
Below are buses which many people find reliable. Other buses
can be found at the central bus station. There are many reports
by travellers about Buffalo bus services, which many reports
of serious overspeeding. |

Royal Coach
- Railway Street (near Mosque)
Tel: 0754 298274 Daily 10.00 This is a good and reliable bus
service. This is probably the only bus service which sticks
to the official speed limit of 80 km/hr and drives carefully.
Most other buses speed, with average speed of 120-130 km/hr.
Sad but true. |

| LOCAL TRAVEL |
| |
Small buses
(dala dala in Swahili) travel to most of the local destinations:
KCMC, Kiboroloni, Machame, Kibosho, TPC etc. Generally if you
stand in the right place, they'll pass you, stop and one of
the guys in the bus will shout the direction the bus is going
- just get in. The Central Bus Stand is the place to start,
but opposite the courts on the old Arusha Road, Arusha Roundabout,
south of the market along the double road, and at the YMCA are
good starting points.
Catching a dala dala to get around town costs TZS. 200 |
| |
Taxis
From the Clock Tower, Bus Stand, Arusha Roundabout and upper market
area on Market Street. Fare in town starts from 1,500 shillings |
| |
Car Hire
Cars and small buses can be hired in the market area. Mauly
Tours will do self-drive hire, but it is more usual, and quite
cheap, to take a driver. Davanu and Riverside (see Nairobi buses
above) also offer a hire service. |
