- East Africa is an ideal environment for solar power generation
as the sun shines strongly for an average of 5 hours per day in
most regions throughout the year. A solar power system can be
used in areas where there is no mains power to provide you with
sufficient power to run domestic lights, a radio & a N in
your home.
- When the sun shines on the solar panel it generates current
in the solar cells, which then charges a battery.
- The battery is simply a store where the power is saved for use
when you need it.
- Only specially made solar lights, TV's, or battery powered radios
can be used in a solar system as the battery produces DC power
at 12 volts. Normal electrical appliances can be used, but it
is expensive because they need AC power at 240 volts, which requires
an inverter to change the voltage.
- A Charge Controller is required to protect the battery from
either over charging by the solar panels, or over discharging
by the electrical appliances. Without it your battery will only
last a few months.

HOW TO CHOOSE AND MANAGE YOUR SOLAR SYSTEM
|
- It is very important that your solar system is designed correctly,
otherwise it will very quickly fail to operate properly, so it
is advisable to buy a professionally designed kit from Sollatek.
As our solar systems all use the same parts, the solar panel in
the "Starter Kit" can always be sold on to another person
once you want to upgrade to a bigger solar system which can power
more lights or electrical appliances.
- Providing the solar panel has received 6 hours of sunshine during
the day to fully charge the battery the kits shown are designed
to provide between 4 to 8 hours of light each evening (except
for the starter kit which requires two days to fully charge your
battery). In the rainy season it will be necessary to minimise
the use of your lights and electrical appliances as there will
not be enough sun to fully charge the battery every day. It is
important to clean your solar panels regularly for best performance.
- You can operate small DC appliances, like a radio or a TV.,
in place of lights for up to 4 hours per night providing the power
requirement of the appliances is about the same as the lights.
As a guide a radio consumes about the same amount of power as
one light, while a DC 14" black & white TV uses the same
power as two lights.

WHY CHOOSE SOLLATEK SOLAR LIGHT KITS?
|
- The 14 watt solar panel in the "Starter Kit" comes
with a 10 year manufacturer's warranty and the Sollatek Charge
Controller and the lights (excluding the bulb) come with a 5 year
warranty.
- The bigger kits are supplied with Unisolar panels which are
unbreakable and come with a 20 year warranty against manufacturing
defects. Unisolar's new Triple Junction Technology gives you 15%
above the rated power for the first three months of use and the
solar panel does not lose power when it heats up, unlike other
crystalline panels, which can lose up to 20% of their output which
seriously affects their battery charging performance. Unisolar
panels also have better performance on dull days and superior
shadow tolerance in case leaves or bird droppings create shade
on the solar panel which reduces the amount of charge going to
the battery.
- The Sunpower 6 Charge Controller uses only 4 milliamps of your
battery power, whereas most other brands consume ten times as
much, and it has sensible voltage limits which will ensure that
your battery lasts for several years & protects against short
circuit & overload.
- The 8 watt Ecolites provide more light when compared with other
10 watt solar lights in the market. he solar battery has a one
year warranty, and if you find it more covenient you may buy it
separately from the local dealer in your area and the cost will
be deducted from the kit price.
- All Sollatek authorised dealers have technicians trained by
Sollatek to carry out professional solar installations and the
cost depends on the location and accessories required.
